Previously, violent fighting between Islamic groups and forces defending the Syrian state and the government of President Bashar al-Assad took place. The Syrian army decided to withdraw from the city.
“In order to preserve the lives of civilians in Hama city and not involve them in fighting inside the city, military units in Hama have withdrawn and taken up positions outside the city,” the Syrian Armed Forces Command said.
“In recent days, our armed forces have fought fierce battles to repel and frustrate the violent and successive attacks launched by terrorist organizations against the city of Hama from various axes and in large numbers, using all military means and equipment, and with the help of immersion groups.”
“During the past few hours, in the face of the intensification of clashes… and the increase in the number of martyrs among the ranks of our forces, these groups managed to penetrate and enter several areas of the city, despite suffering heavy losses among their ranks,” it added.
“The General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces affirms that it will continue to fulfill its national duty and will recover the areas where the terrorist organizations entered.”
On Thursday, international news agencies confirmed that the Levant Liberation Organization managed to break through the defenses of the army loyal to Damascus and enter Hama, the second provincial capital it has taken since the start of its offensive just over a week ago.
The Islamist factions’ military command said that fighting continues in several neighborhoods of Hama and announced that its forces freed hundreds of prisoners who remained in the central prison of the city.
